Unveiling the Responsible Nations Index: India's Global Standing
New Delhi, India: In a groundbreaking development, former President Ram Nath Kovind unveiled the Responsible Nations Index (RNI) at the prestigious Dr. Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC) in Delhi on Monday. This index is a revolutionary tool that ranks 154 countries based on their commitment to responsibility in four key areas: citizen treatment, internal governance, global citizenship, and environmental stewardship.
The RNI challenges traditional rankings based on power or economic might. Instead, it evaluates nations on their actual performance in these critical areas. The results are eye-opening.
Singapore takes the top spot, showcasing its exceptional commitment to responsibility. Switzerland, Denmark, and Cyprus follow closely behind. Interestingly, India ranks 16th, surpassing France and demonstrating its progress in these areas.
However, the index also highlights some surprising findings. Powerful nations like the United States rank 66th, below countries like Libya. Japan, a global economic powerhouse, ranks 38th. These rankings underscore the importance of not just economic and military strength but also the responsible use of power.
In contrast, Pakistan ranks 90th, and Afghanistan ranks 145th, indicating areas where these nations can improve their responsibility towards their citizens and the global community.
The RNI was developed by a collaborative effort between the World Intellectual Foundation, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. The index utilizes comprehensive data from international organizations such as the World Bank, United Nations, IMF, WHO, and the Food and Agriculture Organization, all the way up to 2023.
"The RNI redefines what it means to be a responsible nation," said Ram Nath Kovind. "It's not just about economic or military might; it's about how a country treats its people and the world around it. This index is a call to action for nations to strive for excellence in these areas."
The former President emphasized three key criteria for assessing a nation's responsibility: internal governance, environmental accountability, and global citizenship. This comprehensive approach ensures that no aspect of a nation's responsibility is overlooked.
The Responsible Nations Index is a powerful tool for global comparison and a catalyst for positive change. It invites nations to reflect on their performance and work towards becoming more responsible global citizens.
