Breaking news for hockey fans! Harrison Brunicke, a defenseman for the Pittsburgh Penguins, is heading back to the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League. This move was announced today by Kyle Dubas, the President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.
Brunicke, who is 19 years old, has already made a mark in the NHL, playing in nine games for the Penguins during the 2025-26 season. He managed to score one goal and averaged an impressive 15:43 minutes of ice time per game. But here's where it gets interesting: he's also spent some time with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League, where he racked up four assists and had a plus-2 rating in just five games.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Brunicke made history when he was drafted by the Penguins in the second round (44th overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft. He became only the second South African to ever play in an NHL game, following in the footsteps of goaltender Olie Kolzig.
Brunicke's talent extends beyond the NHL. He proudly represented Team Canada at the 2026 World Junior Championship, contributing two assists and a plus-2 rating in seven games, ultimately helping Canada secure a bronze medal. Before that, he also earned a gold medal at the 2024 World Under-18 Championship.
Before going pro, the 6-foot-3, 201-pound defenseman spent parts of four seasons with the Kamloops Blazers in the WHL. During his time there, he played in 151 regular-season games, scoring 19 goals, 40 assists, and a total of 59 points. And this is the part most people miss: his journey from South Africa to the NHL is a testament to his dedication and skill.
