A powerful earthquake, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, struck the waters off Taiwan's northeast coast at 7:38 am on December 28, 2025. The tremors were felt across the island, with the epicenter located 32 kilometers from the coastal town of Yilan. The earthquake occurred at 11:05 pm local time, causing buildings to shake in the capital city of Taipei.
One resident from Yilan County recounted the experience, describing how the building first swayed vertically and then horizontally. The fear was palpable, as the resident mentioned that most people did not run out, despite the shaking.
The earthquake's epicenter was a staggering 70 kilometers deep, and thankfully, there were no immediate reports of widespread damage or casualties. However, local television footage revealed the aftermath, showing hanging TVs swaying in office buildings and spilled cleaning products and broken bottles that had fallen from supermarket shelves.
Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te took to social media to urge residents to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and caution.
