When it comes to thrilling experiences, few can rival the excitement found at Narrogin Speedway, where a vibrant community of young racers is making their mark. Here, the dirt flies, and hearts race as kids as young as 11 step into the driver’s seat, ready to take on the challenge of speedway racing.
Interestingly, while many of these junior drivers may be too young to legally drive on public roads, they receive comprehensive training that equips them to race responsibly and safely. One standout among these budding racers is Lilly Kulker, an enthusiastic rookie. She was inspired to try racing after watching her brother compete. "It looked really cool, so I decided to give it a go myself," Lilly shared. Despite her initial nerves, she quickly finds her stride once she hits the track, transforming anxiety into exhilaration.
The young athletes are racing quarter midget cars, which are miniature versions of full-sized race cars, capable of reaching impressive speeds of up to 75 kilometers per hour. Notably, six of these racers participate in the Narrogin Quarter Midget Youth Speedway Project, an initiative designed to make the exhilarating world of speedway racing more affordable and accessible to kids aged 11 to 16. This project not only provides the cars and essential maintenance training but also pairs young drivers with experienced mentors who guide them throughout the racing season. Additionally, the participants engage in various fundraising activities to support their racing endeavors.
Looking towards the future, Ryan Donnelly, now 16, reflects on his four years of racing experience and the hard work he put in to earn his own car. "I did lawn mowing and took on clean-up jobs for a real estate agent," Ryan explained proudly. His commitment paid off, showcasing not only his dedication to racing but also valuable life lessons learned along the way.
The Narrogin Quarter Midget Youth Speedway Project began back in 2000, initiated by local police officer Trevor Cruickshank. He recognized a need for an alternative activity for children in a town rich with traditional sports. "I bought eight cars and all the necessary safety equipment," Trevor recalled. "This program was created for kids who weren’t interested in conventional sports; it offered them something unique."
Trevor emphasized that the experience extends far beyond just racing. Young drivers learn crucial skills such as car maintenance, safe handling of equipment like fire extinguishers due to the fuel involved, and even first aid. They receive training in public speaking to prepare them for when they might win awards. "These skills contribute to their future success," he added.
Building lasting connections is another key aspect of the Narrogin Speedway community. Jasmin Ellis, now a mentor, shares her journey of how she got involved. "My dad came home one day and said I would be racing, and I was not thrilled about it at all!" she recounted. "But after a test drive, I fell in love with it, and ten years later, I’m still here, and my sister has joined the fun too."
Group secretary Toni Strange highlights the camaraderie within the community. "We travel to various events across Western Australia and camp together, strengthening our bonds," she noted. Many former members continue to race as adults, creating a supportive network that spans generations.
