Gen. Kayanja Takes Command of UPDF Forces in Somalia: A Commitment to Regional Peace and Security
In a significant leadership transition, the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) contingent serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has a new commander. On December 19, Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja assumed leadership from Brigadier General Joseph Ssemwanga Musoke, who completed his tour of duty. The handover ceremony was presided over by the UPDF Land Forces Commander, Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, who emphasized Uganda's unwavering commitment to regional peace and security, a cornerstone of the country's Pan-African responsibility.
"Uganda stands as a nation dedicated to Pan-Africanism," Lt. Gen. Muhanga stated. "We cannot remain passive as our neighbors endure suffering. Our presence here is a testament to our dedication to peacekeeping efforts beyond our borders."
Gen. Muhanga praised the outgoing commander, Brig. Gen. Ssemwanga Musoke, for his exceptional leadership and contributions to Somalia's stability. He highlighted Operation Silent Storm, a pivotal operation targeting Al-Shabaab elements in the Lower Shabelle region, as a significant achievement in weakening the militant group's capabilities.
Addressing the new commander, Gen. Muhanga urged Brig. Gen. Kayanja to build upon the successes of his predecessor. He emphasized the importance of maintaining security in Mogadishu while upholding professionalism, discipline, and a steadfast commitment to duty among UPDF troops.
Brig. Gen. Ssemwanga Musoke, in his farewell remarks, expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership, fellow commanders, and mission partners for their unwavering support during his deployment. He attributed the successes achieved during his command to the teamwork and cooperation with other AUSSOM forces.
Brig. Gen. Kayanja, in his acceptance remarks, pledged to uphold the values of professionalism, discipline, and mission focus that his predecessor had established. He assured the leadership that these principles would remain at the heart of his command.
The ceremony was attended by key figures, including the AUSSOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, Defence Attaché Brig. Gen. Francis Chemo, Sector One Deputy Commander Col. Francis Aragamoi, Director of Intelligence Services–Land Forces Col. Albert Kashakamba, Battle Group Commanders, and various senior and junior officers. This transition signifies Uganda's enduring dedication to regional stability and peace, a commitment that has been a cornerstone of its Pan-African responsibilities.
