A former NBA referee, Eric Lewis, is making a comeback after a social media scandal led to his retirement in 2023. But here's the twist: he's not just returning to the league, he's being welcomed back with open arms!
After 19 seasons as an NBA referee, Lewis found himself in hot water due to a violation of the league's social media policy. The incident involved a Twitter account, now known as X, which defended NBA referees and responded to various posts about league officiating. The account, under the username "Blair Cuttliff" and handle @CuttliffBlair, was linked to a family member of Lewis and raised concerns within the league.
The NBA launched an investigation, and Lewis fully cooperated, taking responsibility for his actions. As a result, he retired from the NBA on August 30, 2023. But this isn't the end of the story; it's just the beginning of a new chapter.
"At the time, we were worried about this anonymous account," said Byron Spruell, NBA President of League Operations. "As the investigation progressed, we discovered it was Lewis' own burner account. Some of the comments and posts made us uneasy. Ultimately, Lewis decided to step down, acknowledging his mistake. We agreed on his retirement, but left the door open for a potential return."
And now, Lewis is back in the game, starting with the G League. He has completed several benchmarks, including stress management counseling and social media training, to regain his eligibility. His first game back will be a G League Showcase match between the Osceola Magic and Noblesville Boom, scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m. EST in Orlando.
"I'm thrilled to regain people's trust and get back to work," Lewis told ESPN's Andscape. "This game in the G League is exciting. It's great to be back in that environment, reconnecting with a significant part of my officiating career. Getting back to that sense of normalcy and familiarity with the world's top players."
Spruell believes Lewis was a valued referee in the NBA and that some teams have expressed interest in his return. "He made a mistake, owned up to it, and we found a way for him to come back. This isn't about punishment; it's about progression. Any official returning from injury or absence starts in the G League and works their way back to the NBA. We're happy to have him back."
Lewis has kept himself busy during his time away from the NBA, officiating NCAA games, training referees, and serving as a supervisor in the HBCU Mideastern Athletic Conference. He also officiated men's basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season and will continue to do so while working in the G League.
"I truly miss the challenge of working with the best players in the world," said Lewis, a Virginia resident. "It's been a journey, and I'm ready to get back to it. I understand the impact my actions had, and I'm committed to earning back the trust and integrity I once had."
