A groundbreaking astronomer, Shri Kulkarni, has been bestowed with the prestigious Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society, an honor that has been awarded annually since 1824. This recognition is a testament to Kulkarni's remarkable contributions to the field of astrophysics, particularly in the realm of multi-wavelength transient phenomena.
Kulkarni's journey began in 1982, when, as a graduate student, he made a groundbreaking discovery - the first millisecond pulsar, a rapidly spinning neutron star. Since joining Caltech in 1985, Kulkarni's exploration has led to the discovery of a diverse range of celestial objects, including brown dwarfs, distant gamma-ray bursts, and more. In 1995, he and his team made history by identifying the first brown dwarf, a cooler and smaller stellar cousin. Kulkarni's impact continued with the demonstration in 1997 that powerful gamma-ray bursts originate beyond our galaxy, and in 2020, he played a pivotal role in capturing the first fast radio burst (FRB) within our own Milky Way, a finding that shed light on the origins of these exotic flares, linking them to magnetized dead stars known as magnetars.
But here's where it gets even more fascinating. Kulkarni's passion for exploring uncharted territories in astronomy led him to develop the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). These projects have been instrumental in capturing thousands of real-time cosmic events, offering a unique glimpse into the dynamic nature of the universe. ZTF, based at Caltech's Palomar Observatory, continues its survey of the entire Northern sky every two nights, revolutionizing time-domain astrophysics at optical wavelengths.
In his 2024 Watson Lecture at Caltech, titled "Illuminating the Dynamic Night Sky: Discoveries from the Zwicky Transient Facility," Kulkarni shared his enthusiasm for building innovative instruments to explore the unknown. With a total of 10 instruments built during his career, Kulkarni's motto, "Build a big enough gizmo and things will happen," reflects his innovative spirit.
Currently, Kulkarni is involved in developing NASA's UVEX (Ultraviolet Explorer) mission, led by Fiona Harrison. Targeted for launch in 2030, UVEX will conduct the most sensitive ultraviolet sky survey to date. Additionally, Kulkarni is the principal investigator of Z-Shooter, a powerful spectrometer for the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawai'i, with first light expected in 2029.
Kulkarni's impressive academic journey began with a master's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1978, followed by a PhD from UC Berkeley in 1983.
