A family's resilience shines through the ashes of the Longwood fire. In the face of an overwhelming blaze, the Irvines' home stands tall, a beacon of hope amidst the charred landscape.
Bradley Irvine, a young man of 20, recounts the harrowing battle against the flames that threatened their sanctuary in Acheron. "We witnessed the hills engulfed in flames as we approached from town," he shares. With a sense of urgency, they sprang into action, aiding their neighbors and then rushing back to protect their own.
"The heat and wind were relentless," Bradley explains. "The fire swept down the hill, surrounding us on both sides. It was a daunting sight."
Bradley, his father, hobbling on a broken ankle, and a few brave friends formed a formidable defense against the advancing flames. Fire trucks were nowhere to be seen, so they improvised with mops, rakes, and a single water tank.
"We backburned everything, creating a barrier," he says. "It was a surreal experience, but we remained calm and focused."
While they couldn't save everything, the family is grateful for the home that still stands. "We're thankful for the essentials we've preserved," Bradley adds. "Many of our friends have lost so much more."
The aftermath is daunting. Animal shelters are destroyed, fences are damaged, and feed supplies are scarce. Irvine, exhausted from days without sleep or proper meals due to the fire conditions, continues to battle new fires sparked by the wind.
"Preparations made beforehand likely saved our home," he believes. "Filling the gutters with water and creating fire breaks were crucial. The embers in the gutters the next morning could have been disastrous."
Christina Irvine, Bradley's mother and a CFA volunteer, couldn't be at the property during the fire. She was assisting on fire grounds further north. "I received a text from my son saying the farm was under threat," she recalls. "I had to make a difficult choice: let the farm burn while I continued my duty."
Returning briefly to assess the damage, she reflects, "The fire encircled the house, leaving its mark on the garden. But the low grass saved us."
As she prepares to return to the fire grounds, she admits, "I'm not ready to fully process the danger we faced. I need some time to reflect and understand the gravity of the situation."
